Game of Thrones Animatic: Mother of Dragons

Here is my final animatic for my project two brief for Animation. The blood, sweat and tears that went into making this was extremely tiring. A solid weeks work eventually payed off in the end for getting it finished. Even though it may not be amazing looking with the lack of camera movements and how it doesn't smoothly run like a professional animatic but I wanted to mainly add in as many frames as possible so as I was able to see each main detail of the scene and the basic storyline of how Daenerys got her Dragons. It may be slightly scrappy but I am 100% satisfied with how my animatic turned out. Dedication and determination for my animation was worth it.

Scene Production Essentials

For the first stage of my scene production, I started with writing out the script. It wasn't that bad cause there wasn't much talking in this scene just alot of movements.

My main characters during this scene would be Daenerys Targaryen and Jorah Mormount. Since this was a finishing scene of an hour long episode I didn't see the need to add in a title sequence to my script or my animatic.

Daenerys Targaryen is seen wearing alot of costumes during game of thrones but this outfit I loved the most which gave me a better idea of which scene I wanted to animate the most. She also has her hair beautifully plaited around the sides forming into one long plait going down her back. This is my verison of an illustrated Daenerys through Adobe Illustrator. I wanted to keep it simple without ruining the definition of Daenerys's face or hair but yet give it that cartoonish style. Here is a frame whenever she is fully coloured in:

I know her skin is darker than in the actual series but I thought her facial features would stand out more rather than being washed out by pasty white skin.

I know that storyboarding was meant to be done before the actual animatic is made, but because mine took nearly over a week of constant work to be drawn, placed into a video and rendered, unfortunately the story board was made after the finalised animation. So I decided to take a few frames from my animatic and place them onto the storyboard to help give a quick description of what happens during the scene. I also labeled each frame in order by number and putting a short sentence of action of the scene.

For the sound of the scene, I found the clip of game of thrones on youtube which was perfect for placing in my animatic. I used the youtube link of the video and converted it into an mp3 which I then brought into photoshop an placed the audio underneath my layers so whenever I was trying to place each layer in order I done it according to sound and when they would appear.

Inspiration for film style Animatics

Chris Heady's work was the first I came across in Youtube when seaarching through the right kind of animatics to help inspire me. Like Game of Thrones, I really enjoy action and voilence in most films or series, which brought me to this video stylings of an animatic for a Batman Film called : Batman the Last Laugh. I enjoyed watchig this video because I liked how it had quick, scratchy sketches instead of the detailed, shaded. I also took a look at his website which I can tell had alot of inspirational artwork of film stars and movies. Here is a link to his work:

I managed to find a very creative artist through vimeo called Ryan Woodward who does a mixture of art, animation and film. I love his sketchy but shaded animatics through how even though they are short they tell an interesting story. He also does amazing storyboarding for major companies such as: Warner Brothers Feature Animation

Marc Vena does a series storybarding for all different types of companies. Many for advertising, studio and film. I came across his detailed storyboards for the film 'OZ The Great and Powerful' which he done mainly in marker. His stylings desn't seem to be the typical type of storyboarding where there is little detail and rushed but more in depth with what the characters look like and the scene environment. Storyboards Inc. is a company which with holds some of the most talented animators and storyboard artists up to date who do a majority of animations mainly for advertising and promotional work. I love the detail and definition with how they use pe and colour to show the full story before the main production. Also not only do they do 2D animatic they also do 3D as well which I find very creative.

Mother of Dragons

I have been a fan of the action/drama series Game Of Thrones since summer 2014 whenever I watcher the full 4 series up to date and I loved every minute of it. I loved the characters, the element of surprise in every episode, the violence and mutiny for the grand finale's. So whenever I knew I was able to work on something from the media industry I jumped on the chance to create a simply animated verison of Game of Thrones season one finale where Daenerys Targaryen walks into the flames of her first husband funeral ritual and comes out untouched with the birth of three dragons, which I thought was pretty bad ass. So during this animatic idea for my 5 minute scene, I will try and establish a animated version of the actual thing. Here are a few images of the main character for my idea:
